With careful hands, I carve the torso of the terracotta figure, adding details to the female warrior’s armor. I thought it fitting to create a miniature of Ishtar in her glory days to spy on Gilgamesh. Two more figures lay on the table, already completed. Gabriel and Vesta will be getting their visitors later, albeit generic male ones that might bear a passing resemblance to Hammurabi.

The large art room is empty except for me, my sculpting knife providing the only sound in the cavernous space. I’ve moved on to phase two of my plan after getting zero info from the student body. They are as naive as they are prejudiced. Luna has provided plenty of information, just not the kind I need.

At the thought of Goldilocks, I dig a little too hard into the clay, gouging it. Cursing, I quickly smooth the surface out. Luna has been dodging me this past week, and I don’t like it. Understatement. I hate it. After confessing I’m the only friend she’s ever had, she snuggled against me, laid a smoking hot kiss on me, then fled the scene like I was an ax murderer. Which under the circumstances, I don’t deserve the cold shoulder she’s been throwing my way. And I’m a good kisser, dammit, so it can’t be that.

Luna avoids me in class and in the hallways, and I refuse to go to her dorm. I don’t want to come off like some creepster, and yeah, I have my pride. But I’m…hurt. Despite my intentions and better judgment, I’ve grown attached to Luna, even though I know that’s not a good idea. Because eventually I’m going to leave, and she’ll be on her own. I can’t be her savior. My grandfather has to come first, not a blonde bombshell. No matter how sweet she is or how much I like her.

Still, her rejection stings. I’m not used to being rejected. And I miss her. She, too, is my only friend in this gilded cage. I almost resent her for that. I expected solitude here, and she was an unexpected gift of companionship, and now she’s gone. At least I wish I knew what I did to freak her out. I try to tell myself that she reached for me first and kissed me but it’s little comfort. I sigh. Before Luna, I had no problems with women.

Finishing up the miniature of Ishtar, I stand all three figures in front of me and reach for my powers. Wisps of purplish black smoke curl around my wrists and then wrap around the figures. As one, their tiny chests heave, and their painted eyes focus on me. Blinking, I slide into their primitive minds and gaze out of their eyes, seeing myself staring back at them.

“Turn around,” I command and they obey, turning their backs to me, and my vision shifts with theirs. Yep, it all seems to be working. If I need to find them at any time, I’ll be able to. “Attention back to me.
